OCTA 1510 Client Conditions

This course focuses on various conditions, such as upper extremity injury, central nervous system conditions and burn care to underline the interdependent yet dynamic relations within OT intervention.  This course emphasizes behavioral/mental health functioning as foundational to client conditions.  The client conditions course uses theories and principles related to psychological/psychiatric health and illnesses as well as training in assessing and treating symptoms of dysfunction through therapeutic use of self and groups.  Topics include psychiatric illnesses, symptoms of dysfunction, assessment and treatment of individuals, planning and facilitating therapeutic groups, client safety, and psychosocial aspects of practice.  The student is required to call upon gained knowledge in addressing illnesses and conditions with the proper OT strategies.  Upon completion, students should be able to plan effectively and conduct individual and group treatment for client conditions related to psychosocial dysfunction recognizing temporal, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts.  The course is for OTA majors only.
